Motivation Tips For Your Gratitude Journal

Q&A with Mal Duane as asked by Sue Ingebretson, founder of Rebuilding Wellness and author of FibroWHYalgia

Sue Ingebretson: How do I keep clients (or myself) motivated to continue with gratitude journals?

Mal Duane:  To continue to stay motivated to write in your gratitude journal I suggest that you put the journal in a very convenient place where you are likely to see it before bedtime. The night table is a good choice.  You can also challenge yourself to come up with new things to be grateful for each night – even the smallest things matter.  I try to find five things every night. Just noticing these things can help bring a smile to your face and bring peace to your heart. I go to sleep feeling so good about my day and what I have in my life. I wake up in a better place, feeling my gratitude

The healing effects of self-realization that come from journaling make the process well worth doing. It gives each of us an opportunity to speak our truths. We can say anything we want on paper. Writing helps us to release old beliefs, hurt feelings and self- imposed fears.  Through the writing process we can then carry those truths in our lives.  Journaling is a cleansing for the soul and instrumental in putting new action steps in place. When we write we become clear to the true nature of our desires.

Women in Business and Self Love

Q&A with Mal Duane as asked by Charly Leetham, Founder of Ask Charly Leetham

Charly Leetham: Tell me about Women, Self Love and being in business for themselves.  What should Women consider?

Mal Duane: Self-love is a very important component to a woman’s success in her personal and private life. If we do not honor ourselves, how can we expect others to do so in the personal and business relationships we build? And if a woman doesn’t love herself, how can she sell her business (which is, in a way, selling herself)?

When we respect and love ourselves unconditionally, we also will continue to work on our personal and professional development. Someone who loves herself and sets intentions to better herself will go after the knowledge, skills and continued training to help her become better at what she does for a living.

Finally, when we love ourselves, we become better collaborators. A person who is strong and grounded can take the time to see both points of view and not feel defensive when she is criticized. Someone who loves herself is strong and does not feel the need to compete with other team members.

Why Did Your Write Alpha Chick? A Q&A with Mal Duane

A Q&A with Mal Duane. Interviewed by D’Vorah Lansky, Best Selling Author and founder of Authors Marketing Circle.

D’Vorah:  I would love to ask you about your book. I think our listeners would be quite interested in your journey, and the topic of your book.

Mal:  D’vorah, the book is to teach women how to move away from the pain of the past, connect with their present, their authentic voice, and then create the life that they’re looking for in the future. I wrote this book and shared my own personal experience of transformation for women to read so that they know that I walk the walk and talk the talk, that it can be done. I’m just the girl next door, and I was able to do it, and I think through this message of the book, other women will be able to do it as well.

D’vorah:  This is important work because so many women have to hide in fear, and they don’t know how to find their way through the maze to be able to find the power within them.

Mal:  You’re absolutely right. In the past 23 years, I have met so many women in my journey that started to express that they were recognizing how unhappy they were in their lives. There’s a shift going on that women are just beginning to identify what’s missing, what’s not quite right with their lives. They are starting to see they’re really suffering. It may be for various reasons of addiction, a failed relationship, a lost job, a loss of a family member, but they’re starting to identify their suffering. The only thing is, they don’t know that they  have a way out, a way to transform from that pain and tap into their power.

D’vorah:  This opens a lot of questions for me. One of them is:  “How can women access this information, and is that partly why you wrote this book?”

Mal:   Yes. I discovered, in doing my own work and my own transformational process, my own recovery process – it became apparent to me that I was doing certain things over and over again. When I really started to look at the process that I had been using that was so successful in changing my life, I identified that there were  –  originally I thought there were seven steps – and then I realized there were truly five steps in this process of personal transformation.  These five steps, interestingly enough, spell FAITH.

FRAMINGHAM —

After years of alcoholism and self-doubt, Mal Duane transformed herself into an Alpha Chick.

Now the Framingham resident has a book and message to share with women trapped by addiction, depression and failed relationships.

On Feb. 14, Duane launched “Alpha Chick: Five Steps for Moving from Pain to Power’’ as a “personal Valentine’’ to women in need.

“I want to help others learn how to call our authentic voices, which give much clearer, truthful guidance about how to live our lives,’’ she said in her Salem End Road home.

“Alpha Chick’’ has shown strong sales, achieving a ranking around 41,000 on Amazon.com, which tracks 10 million titles.

Part coming-of-age tale, part self-help manual, Duane’s memoir recounts a story that might be all too familiar to women conditioned to feel they’d failed to meet society’s expectations.

Growing up in Chestnut Hill as a 6-foot tall, 100-pound “beanpole’’ who attracted bullies, she began drinking early and developed a crippling lack of self-esteem that poisoned relationships and led to a failed marriage.

“The exterior looked good. Inside, I was emotionally hollow,’’ Duane recalled. “After my marriage failed, I started to spiral downward.’’

Though professionally successful, she saw a psychiatrist for depression but found herself mixing medication with alcohol, compounding her problems.

“My private life was a train wreck. I felt I had no choice or options,’’ Duane remembered. “I found myself in a very dark place. I started looking at death.’’

On that day, Dec. 30, 1989, Duane had an “epiphany’’ that ended her drinking and changed her life.

She recalled, “A voice in my head told me, ‘You are going to survive. You are going to turn your life around. You have lessons to learn. You will need to master those lessons and teach them to others.’’’

She joined Alcoholics Anonymous and has never relapsed. She began a regimen of daily meditation which provides the chance to “sit still, shut out the monkey mind that’s constantly chasing me and decompress.’’

In her living room next to a tile mosaic that reads “Strength to Endure,’’ she’s fashioned a domestic temple where she communicates with “a higher spirit’’ that has guided her toward confidence and self-esteem.

In 2007, she began “Alpha Chick,’’ working through four drafts, sometimes writing eight hours a day.

Self-published by Alpha Chick Press, the 276-page book is divided into a mostly autobiographical first part and the second part which outlines the “Five Steps of the Alpha Chick Process.’’

Duane described an Alpha Chick as “a spiritual being who has worked to deepen her connection with and faith in the Divine Presence within in order to meet life’s challenges with purpose and strength.’’

She seems an unlikely candidate for a retelling of how an “ugly duckling’’ became an “awakened woman.’’

She started and ran a successful real estate business, Mal Duane MetroWest, which merged with Keller Williams to become Keller Williams MetroWest. Several years ago, she married a psychiatrist, Dr. Michael Pearlman.

In memory of a relative, she formed Holly’s Fund, which provides funding for a school in Mali, Africa, that educates 100 girls a year.

Duane said her own growth from “lost soul’’ to empowered woman is “living proof’’ of the message of “Alpha Chick.’’

“No one would have wanted to be in my shoes 25 years ago,’’ she said.” That what I hope the book will do.’’
