Acceptance

Whatever you resist, persists. – Have you ever heard this saying?

It means whatever you are trying to push away or deny, is gonna show up somehow. An example of this is with emotional eating. A friend of mine kept latching on to this phrase for some reason, always telling
herself, I don’t have an issue with this. But this phrase kept popping into her brain. And little by little she began to listen to the voice. And then as she opened the door a little bit, she began to notice that yes, sometimes she would snack not out of genuine hunger but out of boredom, anxiety or the inability to fall asleep. Only then was she able to see her buried emotions and feelings. And boy do we not want to feel our feelings sometimes.

For me, I really have to be present, aware and VERY self-loving to be able to tap into my inner self and what is going on with me. If I don’t, and I resist these feelings or messages from the Universe, they will make themselves known – be it through a migraine, a fall, a forgotten appointment. We have so much to deal with as very sensitive human beings and our emotional health is just as complex and needs just as much care and monitoring as our physical health—although our society is just catching up with these ideas and the culture is finally adopting some healing concepts such as mindfulness and vulnerability as strength.

Unfortunately, just because you stick your head in the sand doesn’t mean that whatever is going on just disappears. Similarly, trying to be a size 2 or the perfect wife won’t hush the voices reminding you of something your mother constantly told you you weren’t great at. The trick is to listen to those voices and then feel the feelings attached to them. Yoga can really help with this process of listening to learn to love ourselves.

What I am really referencing is the powerful practice of acceptance. Sounds simple but our ego and defenses try to protect us from feeling hurt or rejected, because when we were younger and dependent on our caregivers for survival, it was too scary to hear such criticisms or in some cases very hurtful or outright abusive statements. When you accept something you acknowledge that it is true, that it has happened. You are not judging it as right or wrong but just as is. However we put ourselves through unnecessary suffering and anguish by resisting. This ultimately causes more pain than the original event. We can’t change the facts but we can change the meaning we assign to them and therefore, move past them.

One of our biggest challenges is accepting things about ourselves. We can tolerate ungodly things from others but wow do we beat ourselves up over the smallest things. Whatever you did yesterday or a year ago has no bearing on who you are today. So along with our resistance to what is comes a whole lot of judgement. Now we add our personal perspective to the equation and things can get really ugly.

As Brene Brown says, “You either walk inside your story and own it or you stand outside your story and hustle for your worthiness.”

Acceptance takes practice. However once you get it life becomes increasingly easier on you! It doesn’t mean you are letting someone off for their inappropriate behavior.  With acceptance, you are no longer consumed by what they did and now you can move on in a more constructive manner with your life.

This work isn’t for the fainthearted. But the rewards are so worth it!! You can have peace of mind and a forgiving and loving relationship with yourself, which can free you up to take on a new challenge or creative project-the world can open up in incredible ways! LOVE: Small Word With Big Challenges

stacey picWhy is it that most of us struggle with love at various times in our lives?

What seems so simple can become so complex. It’s nothing we can control, especially in others.

It can bring complete bliss or totally crush us. We spend so much time trying to get it right.

But what is right?

Personally, I am still a student of love. I am trying to understand that all the love I need is already within me. By having strong self-love I become a magnet to attract love. It is about what I can do and not about expecting the other person to do something.

Discovering Your Higher Self – Interview with Janet Richmond

How to Overcome Emotional Trauma

It’s the first day of the New Year and the immediate thought running through my mind is Snap, Crackle and Pop. I remember as a kid eating rice crispies with banana and listening to the cereal make its captivating crackling in the bowl. But the snap, crackle and pop I have experienced in the past two years is a very different one.

It’s a short but exact description of what has occurred in my life. I can feel these words today without the emotional thunder that I have experienced previously.

You see in August of 2013, I came across something that was the most unthinkable and devastating betrayal. When you are betrayed by a loved one, the bond between you suddenly snaps so hard that in that instant of discovery you are looking at a totally new snapshot of what your reality really is. The circumstances of betrayal don’t matter much; they all leave the same gaping wound to your sense of self- worth. What you believed to be sacred and true isn’t. I was doubled over, short of breath and insane thoughts were just kept running through my mind. Nothing made sense to me anymore. I was at a loss and I couldn’t connect the dots. My body was shaking from the snap. I could feel nausea setting in. That was an early sign of what I would ultimately experience going forward.

image video 2016Then the crackle started. My heart was so heavy that my body ached. My heart was broken. It had crackled into a million little pieces. I prayed for darkness to come so I could close my eyes. But I didn’t sleep, the crackle continued. I would get up 3 or 4 times a night. Exhaustion started to set in. I felt physically weak. I was in no state to make serious decisions. I have always considered myself a strong resilient woman but this experience and the shattering of my heart brought me to a new point of massive disappointment and despair. I knew in the back of my mind, the only way I could go was up. I had hit my emotional bottom.

Day to day I picked up the pieces, slowly trying to adjust to my new reality. I didn’t have the answers but I did have faith that I would be guided as needed. I used every tool I could find to support my emotional and physical healing. I upped my meditation practice to an hour and journaled thirty minutes a day. I consulted a reiki master and also did healing crystal bed treatments. I visited the local ashram for gong meditations on all the full moons. I had a team in place to support me which consisted of my dear friends and a wonderful psychologist.

All the focus on my well-being and pursued healing modalities that I had used for the past started to take effect. I was feeling emotionally lighter, more pulled together in my daily activities. Then it happened! All of a sudden my life popped. I woke up one morning, the sun was shining and I could actually see it. The massive cloud was gone. I felt enthusiasm for the first time that I hadn’t experienced in so long. My shattered heart wasn’t aching. I knew I was going to regain my power and reclaim my life one more time.

I am ready to start to envision a new future. The picture is entirely different but that’s ok. I fully understand that when we go through a major life change, the universe will bring something better. I have complete faith that wonderful things will come. My biggest lesson from all of this is when the rug gets pulled out from underneath you, you have the ability to get up from terrible circumstances. Stay down for a little while to catch your breath. Let your body settle down. You don’t need to try to get up right away. I have learned that I am very empathetic and also have a very strong intuition. I did not listen to my intuition when red flags first came up. I dismissed my higher self voice that was telling me something was wrong. I now know to pay attention to what my body and intuition are telling me.

It takes work and it absolutely takes commitment. I have a deeper appreciation for my self-worth and for being able to walk through the flames of emotional trauma and stand back in my power as an authentic woman who speaks her truth and advocates for herself.

Here are several keys to getting through gut wrenching emotional trauma.

1.Allow yourself to feel the pain. What you are feeling is valid. Sit with it and just be. You don’t need to do anything. Don’t dismiss a situation that disrupts your life just to keep peace or smooth something over. I stuffed my pain at first and hid my anger, trying to act like I could handle all of what I discovered from the beginning. It came back twice as hard and it delayed my healing progress.

2.Change your focus to one hundred percent on your recovery. What could you do to make you feel better? This is your responsibility and not someone else’s. You need to commit to this.

3.Try different healing modalities until something starts to bring you relief. Create a new spiritual practice. Mediation and reiki are excellent for dealing with emotional trauma which traps bad energy in your body. Journaling helps cleanse your soul.

4.You need a support team. Not just women to cry with but people who really understand what you are experiencing.

5.Look for the lesson that is woven in all that you are going through. Your most painful challenges are your greatest teachers. Is there a pattern to the situation? Does it have similarities to a previous experience? Did you ignore warning signs?

Start your Day Right with a Morning Practice

Wouldn’t it be great to start the day feeling peaceful, focused, and inspired? Every day I start my morning feeling centered and at peace.  My secret is having a morning practice.  Having a daily set of rituals helps you feel grounded in your body, mind, and soul.  Taking time to renew helps you be more creative, productive and energized throughout the day.

I have a meditation tray with all my favorite things that make me feel centered.  It has photographs of people I love, a statue of Buddha, a rosary, and other treasured items.  I am diligent of meditating every day.  I created a special meditation room in my home.  Sometimes I light a candle before I begin. There I can pray, meditate, and find my focus for the day.

Here’s some ideas for things to include in your morning practice.

1) Start the day with coffee, tea, or water

2) Exercise – This can be some stretches, yoga, or a morning walk with the dog.

3) Journal – Writing a few notes in your journal is a way to capture what’s on your mind.  You can start with a journal prompt, writing about the day to come, what you discovered in prayer, meditation, a daily focus… whatever comes to mind.  There are no rules.

4) Prayer/Meditation – Slow down and breath.  Take time to reconnect to the Divine within you.  Listen to the quiet whispers of your soul.  Ask for guidance.  You will be surprised how centered and focused you can be with just a few minutes of morning prayer to ground you.

5) Personal Development – Dedicate yourself to be a lifelong learner. Read a chapter from your favorite book.  Listen to a podcast.  Do a daily devotional.  Read a newsletter from industry experts.  I have a Library of Love I look to for daily growth.  In it are titles like “Simple Abundance” abd “Finding your Own North Star”.

6) Get inspired – Uplift your soul.  This can be reading an affirmation like “I am happy, healthy, and free”.  It may be a word like “courage” that you want to embrace for the day.  Perhaps you found an inspirational quote that sparked your interest. I like to spend 10 minutes internalizing my daily affirmation.

7) Be Grateful – The more your count your blessings, the more blessings you have to count.  Take time to recognize what’s wonderful in your world.  When you appreciate and take joy in what you have, the universe sends you more.

8) Dream and Visualize your Day – What would you like to have, be do? Take a few moments to close your eyes.  Imagine what you’d like to see happen.  Feel it in your heart.  When you feel excited and focus on what you want, it will attract it.  What you think about, you bring about. Create a dream map on the wall.  Have a dream chest with items and pictures that inspire you.  Start a dream folder with pictures about what you’d like to attract into your life.

9) Make a plan – What three things if you did them would make the biggest impact for you?  Tackle the biggest task first while you are sharp and full of energy.

So instead of turning on the computer, hopping into your email, and letting the day control you, setup a morning practice.  It gives you a beautiful, centered time just for yourself.  By easing into your day, you’ll find more joy and stamina to tackle the day. IMG_0059 2015-01-31 14.06.08

You may think I am talking about childbirth but I’m not. What I am really referencing is the powerful practice of acceptance. Sounds simple but boy do we resist. So step two of the transformational process is Acceptance. In my last post we talked about Focus.

In my next post, we are going to discuss Intention. This is my favorite. Since I started setting an intention every day, my life has changed dramatically.
